A Distinguished Career in Australian Family Law
Louise’s career began in the Family Court in 1988, when she was appointed as a Deputy Registrar. After holding that position until 1992, she joined and led a specialist family law team in private practice.
She subsequently returned to the Family Court as a Registrar and was promoted to Senior Registrar, a position she held for four years.
In 2003, Louise was called to the Bar and practised as a barrister specialising in family law. In 2005, she was appointed to the Federal Magistrates Court, as it was then known, and was later appointed as a Justice of the Family Court of Australia.
Across these roles, Louise dealt with the full range of parenting, financial, child support, jurisdictional and high-risk family law matters.
Louise Henderson now brings that experience to Norton Law Group as a family law mediator and strategic adviser, assisting parties to resolve disputes through mediation and providing strategic insight to the firm’s family law team in appropriate complex client matters.
Family Law Mediation with a Difference
Family law mediation is most effective when the mediator understands not only the legal framework, but also the evidentiary, procedural and human considerations that influence whether a dispute can be resolved.
Louise brings decades of judicial and family law experience to the mediation process. She assists parties and their lawyers to identify the issues that genuinely require resolution, test the practicality of competing proposals and consider the risks, costs and consequences of continuing litigation.
For parties searching for one of Sydney’s best or most experienced family law mediators, Louise offers a rare combination of former judicial authority, specialist family law experience and practical dispute-resolution skill.
Her role is not to decide the dispute. It is to create a structured and informed process in which the parties can explore resolution with the assistance of their legal representatives.
Parenting Mediation
Louise conducts mediations involving:
- parenting arrangements;
- high-conflict disputes;
- relocation proposals;
- allegations of family violence or risk;
- supervised-time arrangements;
- communication and changeover disputes;
- schooling, medical and parental decision-making issues;
- international and jurisdictional questions;
- disputes involving older children or changing circumstances; and
- proceedings informed by family reports or other expert evidence.
Her extensive judicial experience enables her to understand the legal and practical issues that frequently prevent parenting disputes from resolving.
The objective of mediation is to help parties develop arrangements that are child-focused, workable and responsive to the particular family’s circumstances.
Financial and Property Mediation
Louise also mediates property and financial disputes involving:
- substantial asset pools;
- companies and trusts;
- business interests;
- multiple properties;
- superannuation;
- inheritances;
- third-party interests;
- overseas assets;
- financial disclosure disputes;
- spousal maintenance; and
- proceedings requiring expert valuation evidence.
Complex financial matters often involve disagreement not only about the ultimate outcome, but also about valuations, disclosure, legal principles and the commercial practicality of proposed settlements.
Louise’s evaluative experience can assist parties and their lawyers to examine these issues within a structured mediation process.
Facilitative, Evaluative and Hybrid Mediation
Louise offers different mediation models depending on the nature of the matter and the parties’ needs.
Facilitative Mediation
In facilitative mediation, Louise helps the parties identify issues, communicate proposals and explore options for resolution without expressing a concluded view about the merits.
Evaluative Mediation
In evaluative mediation, the parties may invite Louise to draw more directly on her judicial and family law experience when examining legal risks, evidentiary issues and possible outcomes.
Hybrid Mediation
A hybrid process may begin with facilitative mediation and incorporate evaluative elements where appropriate and agreed. This allows the process to adapt as the issues narrow and the parties develop greater confidence in the negotiations.
The suitable approach should be discussed with the parties and their legal representatives before the mediation.

Drawing on more than 36 years of experience across private practice, the Bar and the Family Court, Louise can assist the legal team to examine complex parenting, financial, evidentiary and procedural issues from the perspective of a former judicial officer.
Her strategic involvement may include assisting the team to:
- identify the central legal and evidentiary issues in a complex matter;

Louise’s involvement is considered on a case-by-case basis and is subject to professional obligations, confidentiality requirements, conflict checks and the need to preserve her independence in any matter in which she may be asked to act as mediator.
